[Financial News] A man in his 70s who stabbed his wife to death in Jeonju, North Jeolla Province, and fled despite being subject to a court-issued restraining order has been arrested by police.
According to the Jeonbuk Provincial Police Agency and Jeonju Deokjin Police Station on the 14th, police arrested a 71-year-old man identified as A on an emergency basis in Seocheon County, South Chungcheong Province, that day on suspicion of murder. He is being questioned.
A is suspected of stabbing his wife to death in an apartment building in Deokjin District, Jeonju. Police responding to a report at around 5 p.m. that day that “there was blood on the entrance to a home” found the victim already dead at the scene. Based on the condition of the body and other factors, police believe the crime took place on the evening of the previous day, the 13th.
After identifying A, the victim’s husband, as the prime suspect, police immediately began tracking him. A drove his car through several areas of Jeonbuk and South Chungcheong provinces in an attempt to flee after the crime, but was caught in Seocheon County, South Chungcheong Province, at around 8:40 p.m. that day, about three hours and 40 minutes after the body was found. He was reportedly still inside his car when he was arrested.
The investigation found that A had a history of habitual domestic violence, including repeatedly assaulting his wife. In particular, he had recently been placed under court-ordered temporary measures Nos. 1–3 in relation to stalking his wife. The measures respectively require a written warning to stop stalking, prohibit approaching the victim and her family within 100 meters, and prohibit contact by phone, text message or other means. But they ultimately failed to prevent the tragedy.
A police official said, “We are conducting an intensive investigation of A, who has been arrested, focusing on the specific motive for the crime and the circumstances of his flight, among other details.” The official added, “We plan to request an autopsy from the National Forensic Service on the 15th to determine the victim’s exact cause of death.”
