[Financial News] GS E&C is expanding technological cooperation in cooling to strengthen its competitiveness in the artificial intelligence (AI) data center business. Because AI data centers generate more heat than conventional data centers, cooling performance and power efficiency have a major impact on a facility’s competitiveness.
GS E&C said on the 14th that it had signed an MOU with LG Electronics and GRC at its headquarters in Jongno-gu, Seoul, on the 13th, for cooperation on the development of data center immersion cooling and integrated cooling solution technologies, and equipment technology.
Immersion cooling, which GS E&C is set to develop jointly, is a technology that cools servers by immersing them directly in a special, electrically nonconductive coolant. Unlike conventional methods that use air to cool servers, the coolant directly absorbs heat generated by the servers.
GS E&C will be responsible for validating the placement of immersion cooling equipment, structural loads, piping and power connections, and operational and maintenance routes through standard design plans for AI data center construction and operation of a proof-of-concept (PoC) test bed.
LG Electronics will provide technologies related to the cooling systems needed for immersion cooling, operating data and cooling equipment. GRC plans to contribute to improving system performance by providing immersion tanks and control technology, and by drawing on data from equipment installation, operation and maintenance.
Meanwhile, GS E&C is expanding its capabilities in the AI data center business. In August, it established a cooperation framework with LS ELECTRIC Co., Ltd. to support the stable supply of power equipment. In September, it began developing a standard model for prefabricated modular data centers (PMDCs) optimized for domestic conditions, together with LG Uplus, Xi C&A, Gansam Architects and D&O CM.
