[Financial News] If you had to become the prison's most powerful figure to survive, what choice would you make? WEBTOON's 'Fogland' is a dark fantasy action webtoon about a man fighting for survival after being trapped in a vast, mysterious prison. Set in extreme circumstances where human reason and divinity collapse, it depicts the desires and power struggles surrounding survival.
'Fogland' follows Dante Kang, a science teacher sent to the international prison Fogland to reform inmates. One day, Dante is caught up in a sudden riot and becomes trapped inside the prison. His only way out is to become Fogland's most powerful figure, the 'Leader.' Dante continues to make choices to survive in a world teeming with strange creatures and superpowered individuals.
At the heart of the series is a distinctive world set in a vast prison. Fogland is more than simply a place to confine inmates; it is a mysterious world in its own right. The series reimagines a hierarchical structure reminiscent of the Inferno in Dante's Divine Comedy through a modern science-fiction setting. Battles against creatures throughout the prison, power struggles among superpowered individuals, and competition for survival heighten the tension.
The artwork and visual direction are also key features of the series. Artist POGO, who has built a following with works such as 'Lessa' (LESSA), uses precise linework and vivid colors to depict grotesque creatures and bleak settings. The contrast between light and shadow and dynamic action scenes emphasize Fogland's brutal atmosphere. The story's blend of superpowers, creatures, and gore leaves a strong visual impression on readers.
The series also raises questions about human nature through extreme survival scenarios. Its central conflicts revolve around how far people can abandon established morals and order to survive, and how the choices made to gain power change them. Beyond a simple escape story, it shows characters wavering between their desires and their convictions.
Since beginning serialization in September last year, 'Fogland' has also made its mark in the North American market. At New York Comic Con, WEBTOON's parent company, Webtoon Entertainment Inc., operated an experiential booth of about 330 square meters that brought the series' prison and creature-filled world to life. Around 50,000 visitors came during the event, and long lines also formed for artist POGO's signing.
