The Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) decided to launch a party-level special committee to eradicate “relationship-based crimes,” including stalking, dating violence and domestic violence, and to pursue related institutional reforms.
At a Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly on the 14th, Kim Min-seok, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK), said, “We must put an end to the reality in which women are victimized by stalking, dating violence and domestic violence,” adding, “We must thoroughly review the handling of relationship-based crimes in its entirety.”
Kim stressed in particular that there must be no inadequate investigations or harm to the public during prosecution reform and the adjustment of investigative authority, saying, “I will make sure to strengthen police investigative capabilities, keep inadequate investigations and delays in check, and strengthen protections for victims.”
As follow-up measures at the party level, he said, “The party will thoroughly oversee institutional improvements, including a full investigation of all fatal cases involving crimes in intimate relationships and revisions to the Domestic Violence Punishment Act,” and announced, “We will launch a special committee to give particular attention to measures for handling relationship-based crimes.”
Kim also again expressed his condolences to bereaved families, telling victims of relationship-based crimes and their families, “I once again offer my deepest sympathies.”
