[Financial News] The Democratic Party welcomed the appointment on the 14th, praising new presidential chief of staff Lim Gwang-hyun as the right person to speed up the delivery of government results.
Park Sung-joon, the Democratic Party’s chief spokesperson, said, “As the first National Tax Service commissioner under the People’s Sovereignty government, Chief Lim achieved unprecedented results in addressing the long-unresolved problem of large tax delinquencies and restored tax justice.” He added, “Having also served as a member of the 22nd National Assembly and gained broad experience in both the legislature and the government, he is the right person to speed up government results through cooperation among the Democratic Party, the government and the Blue House.”
Park also said of Lim’s resolve that “as every day is urgent for the people, every day at the Blue House must be just as urgent”: “I believe that, true to that resolve, he will bring about changes in people’s livelihoods that the public can feel firsthand and firmly support President (Lee Jae-myung).”
He added, “The Democratic Party will continue to support the government’s work, based on strong ties between the party and the Blue House.”
Democratic Party veteran and lawmaker Park Ji-won, who previously served as chief of staff to former President Kim Dae-jung, offered advice on social media shortly after Lim’s appointment as chief of staff was announced: “He should do a good job of managing the president’s mood, and sometimes say, ‘Mr. President, that really will not do.’ That is what makes a great chief of staff.”
Park said, “I was relieved. It was an unexpected appointment that caught people off guard, but there is no doubt it will be highly regarded. With his extensive experience in tax administration and having been recruited by President Lee, he has served as a member of the National Assembly and as NTS commissioner, and was credited with the excess tax revenue.”
He continued, “I hope he takes to heart the saying that a secretary has no mouth. Only the three chiefs are visible; the prime minister and the Cabinet are nowhere to be seen. The public doesn’t know the senior secretaries, either. If they know anyone at all, it’s just Kim Jung-kwan, the minister of Trade, Industry and Energy.” He advised, “The presidential office should not take the lead. It should coordinate and organize the Cabinet’s policies and work, and support the president so that he can make the decisions.”
