[Financial News] On the 14th, President Lee Jae-myung appointed Lim Gwang-hyun, the NTS commissioner, as the new chief of staff. This is the first time a sitting NTS commissioner has been tapped for the post. Given the names floated for the position so far, some are calling it a surprise appointment.
Chief Secretary Kang Hoon-sik held a briefing at Chunchugwan that day and personally announced Lim's appointment. It came 23 days after Kang expressed his intention to resign to President Lee on the 21st of last month.
Kang described Lim, the new chief of staff, as “a politician from the ranks of economic officials who served as a member of the 22nd National Assembly and as NTS commissioner, and who has extensive administrative experience and political acumen.” He said, “I expect him to carry out the president’s directives on restoring people’s livelihoods and reforming society, and to build a Republic of Korea where everyone can live well together.”
Appearing at the briefing announcing his appointment, Lim, the new chief of staff, said, “I believe my mission is to build on the achievements of the Lee Jae-myung administration and make sure we bring about changes in people’s lives that they can truly feel.” He added, “I will devote all my energy to delivering results for people’s livelihoods. Just as every day is urgent for the people, every day at Cheong Wa Dae must be urgent as well.”
Lim will begin his official duties on the 15th, while Kang will leave Cheong Wa Dae after 499 days.
