[Financial News] “I worked in a coal mine because I had to feed my children. Now that they’re doing well enough to get by, I want to donate.”The good deed of a woman in her 80s, who readily chose to donate despite her modest means to help neighbors worse off than herself, is moving people.
On the 14th, Yongin City announced that on the 8th, A, an elderly resident in her 80s who lives in Cheoin-gu, donated 21.95 million won to a fund to help her neighbors.
A, who has difficulty getting around, went to city hall in person to deliver the donation. Tucked among the bundles of cash she handed over was a handwritten letter, carefully penned one character at a time.
The letter vividly conveyed A’s life, devoted to her family, and her heartfelt commitment to the value of sharing, which she never forgot despite difficult circumstances. A raised four children in modest circumstances with her husband, who works in a coal mine, and asked that the money be used to help neighbors going through even harder times than she was.
In her handwritten letter, A wrote, “Although I’m living in difficult financial circumstances, now that my children have grown into responsible members of society, I want to share with neighbors in need,” and added, “I hope the donation will be used for lonely elderly people and children in families who need help.”
Yongin City visited A in person to express its gratitude for her warm-hearted gesture and presented her with a “Shy Sharing Badge,” created for donors whose anonymity is respected. The Shy Sharing Badge is an item designed to thank donors who quietly practice sharing rather than publicize their names.
