[Financial News] The Pony Chung Foundation of HDC Group has reached the 20th anniversary of its scholarship program for university students in Vietnam.
According to the Pony Chung Foundation on the 14th, it held a ceremony marking the 20th anniversary of its scholarship support at Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, on the 14th and presented scholarship certificates to 35 undergraduates selected as this year’s “Pony Chung Vietnam Scholars.” Approximately 80 people attended, including university vice president Nguyen Minh Tam, Pony Chung Foundation Secretary-General Lee Man-hee, officials from both institutions and former scholarship recipients.
Since signing its first scholarship agreement with Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, in 2007, the Pony Chung Foundation has provided a total of 610 students with one year of tuition and living expenses over the 20 years through this year. It also signed an agreement with Vietnam National University, Hanoi, in 2008 and has selected 590 students through this year. In total, 1,200 Vietnamese university students have received Pony Chung scholarships to date.
Beyond simply providing tuition assistance, the foundation also runs various follow-up programs to develop global talent. These include the “Pony Chung Visiting Scholarship Program,” which selects two outstanding scholarship recipients each year and supports them in pursuing master’s degrees at Korea University Graduate School, and the “Pony Chung Exchange Scholarship Program,” which offers Korean-language majors the opportunity to study abroad. In particular, last September, scholarship recipients served as mentors on a “Cultural Exchange Field Trip” for students at Korean-language schools for multicultural families in Korea, introducing Vietnamese culture and experiencing traditional Korean culture. They played an important role in building ties between the two countries.
A Pony Chung Foundation official said, “Over the past 20 years, talented people selected as Pony Chung scholars have grown into leaders shaping the nation’s future in various fields, and some have become strong bridges between the two countries through studying in Korea and finding work locally.” The official added, “We encourage them to carry on the innovation and pioneering spirit of the late honorary chairman Chung Se-young and keep pursuing their dreams.”
The Pony Chung Foundation was established in 2005 by HDC Group Chairman Chung Mong-kyu, who carried on the talent-first philosophy of his late father, Chung Se-young, honorary chairman of Hyundai Development Company. Now in its 21st year, the foundation continues to support scholarships and academic programs in Korea and abroad. Last May, it signed an agreement with Seoul National University for the “Pony Chung Science Fellowship,” pledging a total of 5 billion won over the next 10 years to support researchers in the basic sciences and contribute to the advancement of scholarship in South Korea.
