Daejeon City said on the 14th that it had signed investment agreements (MOUs) worth approximately 73.4 billion won with three companies based in Daejeon at the city hall’s conference room.
The signing ceremony was attended by Daejeon Mayor Heo Tae-jeong, Axvis CEO Kim Myeong-jin, Fami CEO Hwang Seok-yong, Hansol Paper Central Research Institute head Lee Kang-gun, Daejeon Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chairman Jeong Tae-hee, and others.
Under the agreements, the three companies will build new manufacturing and research facilities or expand existing ones at the Daejeon Industrial Complex and Daedeok Industrial Complex in Daedeok District, and in Taprip-Jeonmin District in Yuseong District. Daejeon City said it would provide full administrative and financial support to facilitate the investments, and the two sides will work together to create new jobs and develop the regional economy.
Founded in 2009 in the Daedeok Research Complex, Axvis supplies intelligent industrial laser solutions that combine optical and software technologies. It provides technology for electric vehicles and secondary batteries and was recently selected as a leading company in materials, parts and equipment by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
The company is currently spending 43.3 billion won to build a new headquarters and factory at the Daejeon Industrial Complex, and plans to expand its factory on an adjacent site to broaden its business into the battery, semiconductor and robotics markets.
Founded in 1998, Fami specializes in semiconductor and electronic-component inspection equipment. It developed its own two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) inspection equipment for use in processes ranging from surface-mount technology (SMT) to semiconductor manufacturing. It is expanding into global markets with its proprietary 3D laser inspection technology. Riding the semiconductor industry boom, it plans to build new manufacturing and research facilities in Taprip-Jeonmin District in Yuseong District.
Founded in 1965, Hansol Paper is one of South Korea’s leading integrated paper manufacturers, producing industrial paper, printing paper, specialty paper, thermal paper and other products. It manufactures products at four domestic locations—Daejeon, Shintanjin, Cheonan and Janghang—and supplies them overseas. Recently, drawing on sustainable materials technologies such as nanocellulose, the company has focused on developing eco-friendly advanced materials for cosmetics and secondary batteries. It plans to expand its factory at its Daejeon plant to increase mass-production capacity.
Daejeon Mayor Heo Tae-jeong said, “Companies that grew in Daejeon continuing to invest in the region and expand their businesses are a strong growth engine for the local economy. We will actively support them so they can continue to grow with Daejeon as their base and become industry-leading companies.”
Meanwhile, the investments are expected to generate synergies with policies to upgrade industrial infrastructure, including Daejeon City’s Daejeon Industrial Complex Regeneration Project and the special-zone development project in Taprip-Jeonmin District, Yuseong District. As the aging Daejeon Industrial Complex is transformed into an advanced, smart and eco-friendly complex, and Taprip-Jeonmin District is developed as a hub combining research and development (R&D) with advanced manufacturing, the investments are expected to help ease local advanced companies’ difficulty in securing sites and strengthen the area’s locational competitiveness.
