[Financial News] The agency representing actor Kim Soo-hyun, who received a decision not to refer the case to prosecutors over alleged violations of the Child Welfare Act, has vowed a strong response to the online spread of false information and malicious attacks.
On the 14th, Kim Soo-hyun’s agency, Gold Medalist, posted a notice on its official website titled “Notice on Legal Action Regarding the Spread of False Information About Kim Soo-hyun, Etc.”
The agency said, “Regarding the claim that Kim Soo-hyun dated the deceased while the deceased was a minor, and the allegations of violating the Child Welfare Act raised on that basis, the investigative authorities decided not to refer the case to prosecutors, finding ‘no suspicion.’ Accordingly, it has been confirmed that the series of claims made against Kim Soo-hyun have no factual or objective basis.”
The agency stressed that “this matter is no longer at the stage of a dispute over facts that have yet to be verified, but is a falsehood proven by the official investigation’s findings,” and added that “Kim Se-ui, operator of the Garo Sero Research Institute, who first made and continued to spread false claims about Kim Soo-hyun, had an arrest warrant issued by a court on suspicion of crimes including defamation by stating false facts under the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection, and has been sent to trial while in custody.”
The agency also said it would hold people legally responsible for reposting claims made by Garo Sero Research Institute head Kim Se-ui. It warned, “Posting, sharing, reposting or redistributing broadcast footage and other material used or made public on Garo Sero Research Institute programs, or excerpting, altering or editing it to amplify and reproduce it, may be deemed malicious additional harm against a victim of crime and an intentional expansion of the damage.”
The agency also said, “The scope of our legal action includes not only the spread of false information but also any act that damages a person’s social standing and personal integrity, including insulting language and personal attacks, malicious mockery and disparagement, posts that subtly distort the facts, videos and images that intentionally excerpt and edit only part of the content, and indirect attacks using initials, insinuations, coded language or nicknames.” It said malicious comments, personal attacks and indirect disparagement would also be subject to legal action.
Kim Soo-hyun effectively halted his activities after allegations about his private life involving the late Kim Sae-ron surfaced in March last year. At the time, the YouTube channel Garo Sero Research Institute and Kim Sae-ron’s family raised claims including that Kim Soo-hyun had dated the deceased since the deceased was a minor. Kim Soo-hyun’s side denied the claims and took legal action.
Since then, Kim Soo-hyun’s side has pursued criminal complaints and claims for damages, challenging the credibility of materials made public during the related disclosures. Last July, police decided not to refer to prosecutors, finding no suspicion, the complaint filed by Kim Sae-ron’s family against Kim Soo-hyun for alleged violations of the Child Welfare Act and false accusation.
