【Financial News, Pyeongchang—Reporter Kim Ki-seop】Potato pancake-flavored chips made with 70 tonnes of new potatoes purchased from farms across the province, including in Pyeongchang, will hit shelves at around 450 large supermarkets and supermarkets nationwide, as well as convenience stores, featuring the characters Gangwon-i and Teukbyeol-i.
According to Gangwon State on the 14th, as part of a regional partnership project, the province has teamed up with Lotte Mart, Lotte Super and Haitai Confectionery & Foods to develop potato pancake-flavored Saengsaeng Potato Chips (Gangwon Potato Chips) featuring the province’s characters, Gangwon-i & Teukbyeol-i. They will go on sale nationwide starting on the 15th. This is the second collaborative product, following corn-flavored Saengsaeng Potato Chips last year.
Haitai Confectionery & Foods purchased 70 tonnes of Seolbong potatoes from farms across the province, including in Pyeongchang County, and created a new recipe that brings out the flavor of potato pancakes. Production will be handled by its Munmak plant in Wonju, which will ship a total of 180,000 bags. The chips will reach consumers through 106 Lotte Mart locations, 350 Lotte Super locations and 7-Eleven convenience stores. The province expects the characters to become better known through the nationwide distribution network as well.

Stores will have dedicated potato-chip displays specially designed around the concept of “Gangwon-i’s Potato Market.” Alongside Gangwon Potato Chips, the displays will offer discounts on Haitai Confectionery & Foods’ signature products made with potatoes grown in the province, including Honey Butter Chips and salmon sushi-flavored potato chips, to showcase the variety of flavors of Gangwon potatoes.
Promotional efforts will use a 3D animated video of Gangwon-i & Teukbyeol-i that playfully depicts a potato pancake transforming into potato chips. Gangwon State, Lotte Mart and Haitai Confectionery & Foods plan to actively promote Gangwon Potato Chips through online and offline channels, including social media (SNS), YouTube and electronic billboards.
Gangwon State spokesperson Kim Young-ho said, “We expect a twofold benefit: 70 tonnes of new potatoes grown by farms in the province will be sold in stores nationwide, while Gangwon-i and Teukbyeol-i will become better known to consumers.” He added, “With this being our second success following last year’s corn flavor, we will continue to expand corporate collaboration products featuring our characters and enhance Gangwon’s brand value.”
