[Financial News] SK Innovation will expand its mangrove forest restoration project in Vietnam to Can Tho City. By 2030, it plans to establish 200 hectares (ha) of new mangrove forest in Vietnam, while also managing plantations with the participation of local residents and providing environmental education.
SK Innovation announced on the 14th that it had signed an MOU on the 13th with the Can Tho City government and local social enterprise MangLub to restore mangrove forests.
Under the agreement, SK Innovation plans to secure sites for mangrove planting in Can Tho City and establish a framework for cooperation to manage and protect the plantations with the local community.
SK Innovation plans to establish 200 hectares (ha) of new mangrove forest in Vietnam by 2030.
Local residents will participate in every stage of the project. The company plans to create local jobs linked to the planting project and provide environmental education for residents and students to explain the value and importance of mangrove ecosystems.
The project will also measure the effects of ecosystem restoration. SK Innovation plans to use its life cycle assessment (LCA) capabilities to measure the biodiversity footprint of planting areas and systematically manage restoration outcomes based on those measurements.
Mangroves absorb and store carbon in coastal areas and provide habitats for diverse living organisms. SK Innovation began its mangrove forest restoration project in Vietnam’s Vinh Long Province and later expanded its operations to Myanmar, Malaysia and the Republic of Fiji, among other places. Since 2018, it has planted a total of 1.14 million saplings, covering 294 hectares (ha).
Kim Woo-kyung, head of SK Innovation’s PR Office, said, “In Vietnam, alongside resource development and power generation, we are pursuing key renewable energy businesses such as solar and wind power,” adding, “We will also work to expand youth employment through local social enterprises, encourage community participation, and provide education to improve environmental awareness.”
