People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyuk strongly criticized the Lee Jae-myung administration’s foreign affairs and security policies, calling for the immediate dismissal of Unification Minister Chung Dong-young and National Intelligence Service Director Lee Jong-seok, who are in charge of the foreign affairs and security line.
At a Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly on the 12th, Jang said, “Under President Lee Jae-myung’s administration, South Korea cannot distinguish friend from foe at all, and it may end up with no allies left,” and claimed that “the U.S.-South Korea alliance, a key foundation of foreign affairs, security and the economy, is effectively on the verge of collapse.”
As evidence of cracks in the U.S.-South Korea alliance, he cited the suspension of U.S. intelligence sharing on North Korea for six months; the South Korean National Intelligence Service’s refusal to attend a Korea-U.S.-Japan meeting on responding to North Korean cyberattacks; and the suspension of U.S. visa processing for embassy staff posted to Washington and Jeong Cheong-rae, a Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker.
He added, “The United States is pointing out that South Korea must comply with alliance standards in intelligence and counterintelligence,” he said.
Jang identified Unification Minister Chung Dong-young and National Intelligence Service Director Lee Jong-seok as the causes of this security crisis, urging that “the two people at the root of the problem must be replaced immediately.”
Jang criticized the administration, saying, “Despite North Korea’s landmine provocations and missile launches, not a single line calling for an apology or issuing a warning from the president has been heard,” and, “The government announced it would provide medical equipment to North Korea at a cost of nearly 10 billion won in taxpayers’ money, but all it got in return was a parade of North Korea’s abusive remarks and nothing but disregard.”
He added, “President Lee Jae-myung has not even the bare minimum of self-respect and is busy doing nothing but catering to Kim Jong Un’s feelings.”
