[Financial News] The White House has officially asked Kimberly Guilfoyle, the U.S. ambassador to Greece, to resign amid various allegations of misconduct. Guilfoyle, a former Fox News anchor and former fiancée of President Donald Trump’s eldest son, has faced intense pressure to resign over controversy surrounding improper financial dealings and lavish hospitality.
New White House press secretary Katie Zakaria said in response to a question on the matter at her first official briefing on the 13th (local time), “We asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to resign.” Zakaria added, “She was a great asset to our team, and we wish her well going forward,” but the remarks were seen as effectively amounting to a White House dismissal. The day before, President Trump had also expressed his displeasure over the possibility of Guilfoyle’s removal, saying, “I’m watching the situation, and I’m not satisfied at all.”
Guilfoyle’s downfall was triggered by shocking allegations of misconduct that recently emerged. According to foreign media outlets including The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), in July last year, ahead of her Senate confirmation hearing as ambassador, she messaged prominent Republican donor Eric Deters, “Honey, please make sure you take care of this today,” and asked him to pay off $100,000 (about 130 million won) in personal credit-card debt. Deters revealed that he had refused, saying, “That would have ended my marriage.”
Allegations of ties to Greek tycoons were also raised. Guilfoyle reportedly attended the Davos forum in Switzerland aboard the private jet of the CEO of Greek construction company Aktor Group. It also emerged that, with support from Greek “shipping king” Nicholas Tsakos, she spent an extravagant year-end at a top-end ski resort in Switzerland and a luxury hotel in Paris. Allegations were even made that she threatened Greek officials to obtain improper gifts and favors, and the U.S. State Department’s Office of Inspector General has launched a formal investigation.
Guilfoyle is also well known in U.S. political circles for her high-profile personal life. She married and later divorced California Governor Gavin Newsom, now a leading Democratic presidential contender, and later became engaged to Donald Trump Jr., frequently appearing in public during the 2024 presidential campaign. She was selected as ambassador to Greece after the election victory, in part on the strength of that profile. However, she and Trump Jr. had split before the election, so she never became his legal daughter-in-law. Trump Jr. married socialite Bettina Anderson last May.
With the White House urging her to resign, Guilfoyle is expected to leave in disgrace soon, under the guise of a voluntary resignation.
