[Financial News] A woman in her 20s who suffered cardiac arrest in a knife rampage at a large commercial complex in Guwol-dong, Namdong-gu, Incheon, on the afternoon of the 13th underwent emergency surgery but has yet to regain consciousness, it has been reported.
According to police and Gachon University Gil Medical Center, the victim, a woman in her 20s identified as A, was stabbed with a weapon wielded by the suspect, B (59), and taken to the hospital in cardiac arrest. A recovered from cardiac arrest after emergency surgery but has reportedly not regained consciousness and remains in the intensive care unit. Medical staff plan to monitor her recovery and conduct further tests soon.
A total of nine people, men and women in their 20s to 50s, were victims of the knife rampage, including A. The other eight victims, including a woman in her 50s who suffered injuries to her arms and shoulders, are reportedly not in life-threatening condition.
The police investigation found that B carried out a premeditated attack with a weapon in each hand, his hands and the weapons tightly bound together with white tape. B entered the building from outside on the first floor, took the elevator to the second floor, then rode the escalator up and down, including to the third floor, swinging the weapon at random people approaching from the opposite direction. The horrifying rampage ended when members of the public on the third floor actively intervened to subdue him by throwing chairs and other objects.
Police recovered two bladed weapons at the scene and seized two additional blunt weapons from B’s bag. B was found to have been wearing an electronic tracking device (ankle monitor) at the time of the attack because he had previously been convicted on an attempted-murder charge. He had also been booked by Incheon Gyeyang Police Station as recently as last September for allegedly possessing a weapon in a public place and was under investigation.
Police plan to question B intensively about the specific motive and whether the crime was premeditated, then seek an arrest warrant on the 14th on charges including attempted murder.
