[Financial News] Student protests demanding improved educational conditions and increased funding continue in France.
On the 12th (local time), France’s education ministry said, “About 130 of the country’s 3,700 high schools have closed,” adding, “The number of schools closed is falling, but violence during the protests is worsening.”
So far, eight school staff members have been injured, mainly in Paris, Bordeaux and Lyon, and about 6,800 people have been arrested by police since the protests began in the middle of last month.
Controversy over excessive police crackdowns continues, with 24 cases currently under internal investigation over allegations of improper responses.
The French government has begun deploying 3,000 substitute teachers to 114 of the hardest-hit schools, but students are protesting that this falls far short of their demand for a €10 billion (about 15 trillion won) increase in the high school budget.
A day before nationwide protests, President Macron urged restraint, saying, “Time, consultation, discussion and respect are needed.”
