According to Yonsei University and other sources on the 13th, an applicant wearing smart glasses was caught by a proctor during the math essay exam for the natural sciences and integrated studies tracks, held on the 10th at the university's Sinchon Campus in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul.
The proctor noticed the applicant wearing smart glasses during the exam and confiscated them on the spot. The applicant reportedly admitted to the university after the exam that they had used the smart glasses.
The university believes the applicant switched from regular glasses to smart glasses after the exam papers were handed out. Before the exam, Yonsei had alerted proctors to the possibility of cheating with smart glasses and instructed them to check applicants wearing glasses.
Smart glasses are wearable devices that combine AI with tiny components such as cameras and microphones. Because they are difficult to distinguish from ordinary glasses by appearance and can be used to access information in real time through AI, concerns have been raised that they could be exploited for cheating in exams.
Yonsei's exam guidelines state that applicants may be disqualified if they possess electronic or communications devices, including smartphones and smartwatches, during the exam. Although smart glasses are not specifically listed, the university determined that they fall under this category and prohibited applicants from bringing them into the exam.
A Yonsei University official said, “It seems the applicant switched to smart glasses after the exam papers were handed out,” adding, “We are currently conducting an internal investigation and discussing how to respond.”
