On the 12th, People Power Party Supreme Council member Kim Min-soo urged Lee Tae-han, the special counsel for the National Election Commission (NEC), to regularly brief the public on the progress of the investigation at a Supreme Council meeting.
At the meeting that day, Kim began his remarks by saying, “About 35 days have passed since the launch of Lee Tae-han’s special counsel investigation into the NEC, but the public is anxious because there have been too few reports or briefings on the progress of the investigation.”
He cited specific examples of previous special counsel investigations and took issue with the frequency of briefings by the NEC special counsel.
According to Kim’s analysis, the insurrection special counsel held 25 briefings over its 180-day term (nine in the first two months), the Chae Sang-byeong special counsel held 36 over 150 days (21 in the first two months), and the second comprehensive special counsel held 16 over 180 days (eight in the first two months). On average, they briefed the public on the progress of their investigations 15 times in the first two months.
By contrast, the special counsel for the NEC, which launched on September 7 and was entering its second month, held only four briefings in total, and even those contained no information related to the investigation, Kim said.
Kim stressed, “Given that this is an issue directly tied to the sovereignty and voting rights of the Republic of Korea, the investigative process, too, should be conducted on an equal and fair basis, as with other special counsel investigations.” He added, “I trust that the investigation is being conducted thoroughly, but I hope briefings on its progress will be held frequently, as with other special counsel investigations, if only to ease public anxiety.”
