First conducted in 2011 after receiving national approval from the National Data Agency, the survey is now being conducted for the 16th time and is one of Busan’s signature regional statistical surveys. It is conducted to track the state of Busan’s strategic marine industry each year, foster and develop related industries, revitalize the local economy, and strengthen national competitiveness.
In particular, this year the survey will for the first time apply the revised ‘Special Classification of the Marine and Fisheries Industry,’ announced last February through the National Data Agency’s Statistical Classification Portal. The city had conducted the survey using its own ‘Marine Industry Classification,’ developed to reflect local characteristics, but will revamp the survey system starting this year by adopting the national standard, the Special Classification of the Marine and Fisheries Industry.
Of the approximately 33,000 businesses covered by the survey, enumerators will survey around 3,600 through in-person visits, phone calls, email, fax, and other means. The remaining businesses will be covered in a census using administrative data.
The survey has 14 items in total, including type of business, number of workers in marine industry workplaces, and share of revenue. Personal confidential information collected to compile statistics is strictly protected under Article 33 (Protection of Secrets) of the Statistics Act and may not be used for any purpose other than compiling statistics.
The results are expected to be available around July next year on the Busan Marine Industry Survey page of the statistics section of the city’s website.
Busan City Planning Director Yoon Jeong-no said, “Based on the results of this survey, we will develop policies to boost the competitiveness of Busan’s marine industry and support its sustained growth and development, further elevating Busan’s standing as an international maritime city.” Yoon also said, “I ask businesses covered by the survey for their active cooperation so that accurate and reliable statistics can be produced.”
