[Financial News] Samsung Electro-Mechanics announced on the 13th that Kim Wi-heon, head of its MLCC Manufacturing Technology Team (managing director), received the Industrial Service Merit Medal at the awards ceremony for the 21st Electronics and IT Day, held at COEX in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, for his contribution to strengthening the competitiveness of Korea’s electronics and automotive components industry.
Kim was recognized for his contribution over 26 years to the localization of high-value-added products for IT and automotive electronics and to strengthening their global competitiveness, leading the development of key new products and foundational technologies in the multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) field.
Kim, who joined Samsung Electro-Mechanics in 2000, has focused on improving the technological competitiveness of small, high-capacitance products as an MLCC product-development expert. In 2009, he developed the world’s first 1-μF MLCC in the 0603 size (0.6 mm wide and 0.3 mm tall), followed by the world’s first 2.2-μF product of the same size in 2011.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics said these technological developments helped secure key component technologies needed to improve smartphone performance while reducing thickness, and strengthen the competitiveness of Korean companies in high-value-added MLCCs for IT applications.
Drawing on his experience developing products for IT applications, Kim also led the development of key materials and process technologies for automotive MLCCs. In 2022 and 2023, he helped expand the business’s competitiveness by developing high-capacitance MLCCs for automotive applications for the first time in the industry.
Since 2024, he has headed the MLCC Manufacturing Technology Team in the Component Solutions Business Unit and led the development of products for AI servers. By developing and supplying high-value-added MLCCs to global semiconductor companies on schedule, he has contributed to expanding the AI server MLCC business and strengthening its technological competitiveness.
Kim said, “I will take the lead in strengthening the competitiveness of Korea’s electronic components industry by proactively developing high-value-added MLCC technologies and products that will drive growth in future industries such as AI and automotive electronics.”
