[Financial News] The Korea Maritime Institute (KMI) said on the 13th that it had held a meeting on the afternoon of the 12th at Chonnam National University's Yeosu Campus to discuss cooperation measures, including joint research, to address regional fisheries and fishing village issues.
Recently, KMI has been signing agreements with regional hub universities and pursuing joint research, among other initiatives, to address regional maritime and fisheries issues and strengthen industry-academia-research collaboration in line with the government's Five Mega-Regions and Three Special Self-Governing Provinces Strategy for balanced growth. KMI previously signed agreements with Gyeongsang National University in June last year, Kangwon National University in November that year, and Incheon National University in July.
The meeting focused on regional fisheries and fishing village issues and discussed ways to cooperate on joint research, identifying policy tasks, and training professional personnel. In particular, the participants agreed to pursue joint research to address regional issues by linking Chonnam National University's technical and field research capabilities with KMI's policy analysis capabilities.
They also discussed forming the tentatively named Chonnam National University–KMI Joint Research Council to establish a cooperative framework spanning the identification of on-the-ground needs, basic research, and policy proposals. The two institutions agreed on the need to jointly review aquaculture technology development and related systems to address changes in the fisheries industry environment resulting from climate change, and to connect research outcomes with policymaking.
The two institutions also decided to pursue an official memorandum of understanding within the year to sustain collaboration on joint research, personnel exchanges, and education. They also considered ways to develop regional experts and expand the impact of their collaboration through exchanges among researchers, annual results-sharing meetings, and medium- to long-term joint workforce training programs.
KMI President Jo Jeong-hui said, “KMI is connecting the diverse maritime and fisheries issues faced on the ground with research and policy through collaboration with regional hub universities. Taking this meeting as an opportunity, we will work to make our cooperation with Chonnam National University more concrete and ensure it leads to research needed on the ground and the training of professional personnel.”
