[Financial News] The Handok Museum of Medicine and Pharmacy will host a talk concert with Korean history lecturer Choi Tae-sung exploring medical culture and the history of medicine in Joseon.
The Handok Museum of Medicine and Pharmacy announced on the 13th that it will hold a special talk concert, “A Joseon-Era Hospital Playlist Told by Teacher Choi Tae-sung,” at 4 p.m. on the 24th in the auditorium of its museum in Eumseong, North Chungcheong Province.
The event is a humanities and liberal arts program that will explore, through history and medical artifacts, how people in Joseon understood and treated illness and what roles medical practitioners played at the time. The museum plans to introduce artifacts from its collection alongside historical records, bringing to life the medical environment of the period and how people responded to disease.
The lecture will be given by Choi Tae-sung, known as “Big Star Teacher.” Choi is a history lecturer who has made Korean history easy and approachable for audiences through Educational Broadcasting System (EBS), YouTube and other broadcasts. He has also contributed to writing textbooks and EBS study materials linked to the Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation.
The event is free, and advance registration is available on the Handok Museum of Medicine and Pharmacy website. Registration is limited to 300 people on a first-come, first-served basis. After the lecture, Choi will hold an autograph session for about 30 attendees who bring one of his books or a certificate showing they passed the Korean History Proficiency Test.
The museum will also run an event on its official Instagram account inviting comments about what participants are looking forward to. Twenty participants will be selected by lottery to receive “The Usefulness of History” and “The Usefulness of History for Children,” each bearing Choi’s handwritten signature.
A representative of the Handok Museum of Medicine and Pharmacy said, “We hope that through this talk concert, visitors will gain a new perspective on the lives and medical culture of people in Joseon and experience the meeting of medical artifacts and history.”
The Handok Museum of Medicine and Pharmacy, established in 1964 to mark the 10th anniversary of Handok’s founding, was the first corporate museum in Korea and is also a specialized museum. It is operated by the Handok Jaeseok Foundation and houses and exhibits around 20,000 medical artifacts from Korea and abroad, including six Treasures designated as national cultural heritage.
