[Financial News] A couple in their 40s who decided not to have children sought advice, saying they were unsure what to do with their assets after they die.
On the 11th, a post titled “For Those Who Aren’t Having Children: The Issue of Assets” was posted on the online community Nate Pann.
The author, identified as A, began by saying, “My husband and I are in our mid-40s,” and added, “Because of my husband’s and my chronic health conditions, as well as our age, we gave up on having children.”
A confided, “As time has passed, I’ve found myself wanting a baby more and more, but I think it’s too late, so I’m trying to let go of that desire. My chronic condition can be managed with medication, but I’m worried about heredity, and I also worry about what would happen if a child were born with mental health problems as well.”
A continued, “The problem is our assets. We have quite a lot, and I’ve been wondering on my own what we should do with them if we die. If we had a child, we could simply leave the assets to them, but if we’re DINKs or single, how should we decide?” A asked, seeking advice.
Internet users who read the post offered opinions such as, “You both have chronic illnesses and are older—what is there to worry about? Spend it all before you go. There are plenty of things to spend money on when you’re old, too. If you hire live-in caregivers to look after you at home instead of going to a nursing home and feeling like a burden, the money will soon be gone”; “When the time comes, go to a really nice nursing home”; “If you fall ill in old age, even your assets may not be enough. If you want to preserve your dignity in a frail, painful old age, then no matter how much wealth you have in your 40s, it’s never too much, so there’s no need to worry about it in advance”; and “Spend all you can, and donate whatever is left.”
