Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Russia of breaking the “energy truce” announced by U.S. President Donald Trump on the 12th (local time). He suggested that Ukraine could also resume attacks on Russia if the attacks do not stop.
Earlier, President Trump said on the 11th on his social media platform Truth Social that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an “energy truce.”
According to the Financial Times (FT), in a video address at the Warsaw Security Forum in Warsaw, Poland, that day, President Zelenskyy said Russia had launched widespread attacks overnight on Ukrainian power-generation and gas facilities using drones and missiles.
He said Trump should have reached out to him before brokering a “transit agreement” with Russia, adding, “Right after Trump’s post went up, Russia began attacking targets.” He then scoffed, “(Russian President) Putin must not read Truth Social.”
Zelenskyy said, “Russian oil refineries did not catch fire last night, but in the middle of the night, Russian Shahed drones attacked a Ukrainian gas-fired power plant,” adding, “This is Putin’s answer to Trump.”
According to the FT, Russian airstrikes left cities across Ukraine, including the capital Kyiv, without power and water from last night until this morning, and Russian drones continued attacking Kyiv even as Zelenskyy spoke in Warsaw.
Zelenskyy said, “We are ready to respect the energy truce,” adding the caveat, “but only if Russia is ready to do so.” He added that Ukraine could even provide “a signature guaranteeing it” to demonstrate its commitment.
Russian Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on the 12th, without commenting on Trump’s ceasefire announcement, that “contacts between the Russian and U.S. leaders are continuing.” He went on to say that Russia was willing to halt attacks for just one day to allow Ukraine to hold elections. Peskov claimed, “A 60-day ceasefire is needed not for elections, but only to heal wounds and reorganize forces so the war can continue.”
Meanwhile, the United States has been pressuring Ukraine to stop attacking Russian oil-refining facilities. It has reportedly threatened to withhold U.S. satellite intelligence and other information essential to Ukraine’s ability to conduct combat operations if Ukraine does not comply.
Zelenskyy has warned that Ukraine could resume attacks on Russian energy facilities if Russia continues its attacks, but it remains unclear whether Ukraine will follow through amid the real risk that intelligence sharing could be cut off. As a result, European diesel prices fell on the 12th.
