[Financial News] A Russian man in his 20s who took a woman who had passed out drunk outside a club in Hongdae, Seoul, to his lodging and sexually assaulted her was sentenced to prison, with the sentence suspended, at his first trial.
On the 12th, the 12th Criminal Division of the Seoul Western District Court, presided over by Judge Choi Jeong-in, sentenced A, a 23-year-old Russian national who had been indicted while in custody on charges of quasi-rape and abduction and enticement for the purpose of sexual intercourse, to two years in prison, suspended for three years. A, who had been held in custody during the trial, was released that day.
A was sent to trial on charges of sexually assaulting B, a Mongolian woman in her 20s, at a lodging establishment near Hongdae in Mapo-gu, Seoul, in the early hours of July 16.
Investigators found that A, who was traveling in Korea at the time, spotted B asleep drunk outside a Hongdae club, put her in a taxi, took her to the lodging where he was staying, and committed the crime. The two had never met before.
The panel noted, "The nature of the offense is serious in light of the method and circumstances, and the victim suffered considerable sexual humiliation and mental distress as a result of this case."
However, the panel explained its reasons for sentencing, saying, "We took into account, among other things, that the victim reached a settlement with the defendant and does not want him punished, and that the defendant is a first-time offender with no prior criminal record."
