【Financial News | Jeju = Jeong Yong-bok, reporter】 Cambodia’s incumbent senior minister has been appointed honorary ambassador for Jeju National University Hospital. The move aims to expand the hospital’s ongoing medical volunteer work and medical staff training in Cambodia into international medical exchanges and medical tourism cooperation.
Jeju National University Hospital said on the 12th that it had invited Cambodia’s Senior Minister Ly Thuch (Ly Thuch) on the 6th, presented a plaque of appreciation, and appointed Ly Thuch as an honorary ambassador. Ly Thuch also serves as first vice-chairman of a national body within the Cambodian government responsible for landmine clearance and victim assistance.
The appointment recognized support for the hospital’s medical volunteer activities in Cambodia from 2022 to 2025. Jang Won-young, president of Jeju National University Hospital, also received a letter of appreciation from the Cambodian government for contributions to improving the health of the Cambodian people.
The two sides’ medical cooperation builds on earlier medical education and volunteer programs. In 2020, Jeju National University Hospital signed a memorandum of understanding with Jeju National University and Rotary International District 3662 to train medical personnel overseas, and has since supported the training of Cambodian medical staff and the provision of care to local residents.
In January 2024, the hospital provided local medical staff at the National Pediatric Hospital in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, with training in surgical procedures and medical equipment management. In villages outside Phnom Penh, specialists in orthopedics, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, and other fields treated around 400 residents.
Building on this experience in medical cooperation, Jeju National University Hospital plans to expand exchanges with Cambodia and pursue measures to promote medical tourism. The honorary ambassador appointment has also laid the groundwork for external cooperation that will enable the hospital to promote its medical services and international cooperation activities in Cambodia.
Senior Minister Ly Thuch said, “I am grateful for Jeju National University Hospital’s medical volunteer work in Cambodia,” adding, “As an honorary ambassador, I will promote the hospital internationally and support efforts to boost medical tourism.”
Jang Won-young, president of Jeju National University Hospital, said, “With this appointment as an opportunity, we will strengthen ties of trust with Cambodia and pursue exchanges and cooperation that can contribute to the development of healthcare in both countries.”
