【Financial News, Tokyo—Correspondent Hyejin Seo】North Korea fired several ballistic missiles into the East Sea on the morning of the 12th. The Japanese government said it believed all the projectiles had fallen outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ). The launch was North Korea’s 16th ballistic missile launch this year, and came nine days after the previous one on the 3rd.
According to Kyodo News and NHK, Japan’s Ministry of Defense announced that projectiles believed to be ballistic missiles were launched in succession from North Korea at around 9:20 a.m. and 9:40 a.m. that day. The ministry began gathering and analyzing information to assess the impact on Japan.
The Japan Coast Guard urged ships underway to exercise caution. No damage to Japanese vessels had been confirmed by 10 a.m. that day.
The Japanese government activated an emergency team made up of officials from relevant ministries at the crisis management center in the Prime Minister’s Office. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi instructed officials to make every effort to gather and analyze information and to thoroughly check the safety of aircraft and vessels. She also called for preparedness to respond to any contingency.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff also said North Korea had launched several ballistic missiles from the Pyongyang area toward the East Sea that morning, with a flight distance of at least 900 km.
It was the first time North Korea had launched missiles from the Pyongyang area since August 20. At the time, North Korea fired around 10 short-range ballistic missiles believed to be 600-mm KN-25 super-large multiple rocket launchers into the East Sea.
