The Busan Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries announced on the 12th that the names of Piers 1–4 at Gamcheon Port would officially be changed to “Gamcheon Port Deep-Sea Piers 1–4.”
Since its completion in 1999, the East Pier at Gamcheon Port has worked with nearby hinterland facilities, including refrigerated warehouses, and served as the country’s largest pier for handling deep-sea catches. For more than 30 years, it has also served as a hub for the development of Korea’s deep-sea fishing industry. The Busan Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries said the name change was being pursued to reflect the pier’s history and function in its name.
The name change will strengthen policy ties with the government’s “Fourth Comprehensive Plan for the Development of the Deep-Sea Fishing Industry.” It will also address the mismatch between the pier’s name and Wonyang-ro, the road on which it is located.
The Busan Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries said it had consulted stakeholders in advance to minimize confusion among existing users of Gamcheon Port following the name change. In particular, the name is being revised to emphasize the pier’s role as a facility specializing in deep-sea fishing while retaining the existing name Gamcheon Port.
The plan is to promptly update relevant materials, including the Port Basic Plan and nautical charts, with the revised name, and notify relevant agencies and business and industry groups of the change to minimize confusion.
Heo Man-uk, director of the Busan Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries, said, “I hope this name change will help Gamcheon Port become widely recognized as a leading hub port for the deep-sea fishing industry,” adding, “We will continue to do our utmost in port operations and support to enhance the industry’s competitiveness and ensure the continued development of related industries.”
