“You can’t even make breakfast properly?” ... Husband in his 70s gets suspended prison sentence for assaulting wife

[The Financial News] A man in his 70s who assaulted his wife because she did not prepare breakfast properly was given a suspended prison sentence.
According to News1 on the 12th, Chuncheon District Court’s third single-judge criminal division (Judge Park Dong-wook) said it had sentenced A, 79, who was indicted on a charge of special bodily injury, to eight months in prison, suspended for two years.
A was indicted on a charge of repeatedly striking his wife B, 76, on the head with a trouser hanger at a residence in Hongcheon, Gangwon Province, at around 7 a.m. on May 31.
Investigators found that A assaulted B because she had not properly prepared breakfast that morning.
He approached B, who was sitting at the living-room table, and struck her on the head six to seven times with a wooden trouser hanger. Even after the hanger broke, he reportedly hit the left side of B’s face with his fist two to three times. A was also reported to have struck both of B’s arms five to six times as she tried to stop him.
B reportedly suffered injuries requiring about two weeks of treatment as a result of A’s assault.
The court noted, “The nature of the offense is serious in light of the motive and circumstances,” adding that “the victim wants him punished, and he has a history of being punished several times for offenses of both similar and different kinds.”
The court explained its sentencing decision, saying, “However, we took into account that he admitted to the offense and showed remorse, that the victim’s injuries were relatively minor, and that the defendant is in poor health.”
