[Financial News] The Korea Automotive Technology Institute (KATECH) is joining forces with an Italian research institution specializing in wireless communications to secure future vehicle technologies based on sixth-generation mobile communications (6G). It aims to integrate next-generation wireless technologies, including vehicle communications and the Internet of Things (IoT), into connected cars and boost technological competitiveness in future mobility through international joint research and development (R&D).
KATECH said on the 12th that it had signed an MOU with WiLab, part of Italy’s National Inter-University Consortium for Telecommunications (CNIT), to collaborate on research into future mobility based on advanced wireless communications.
Jin Jong-wook, president of KATECH, and Andrea Conti, director of WiLab, attended the signing ceremony held at WiLab in Bologna, Italy, on the 9th (local time).
WiLab is a wireless communications research institute affiliated with CNIT, a nonprofit research consortium established by Italian universities in 1995. It has research capabilities spanning wireless communications theory, industrial applications and demonstrations, and focuses on next-generation communications technologies, including 6G, vehicle communications, IoT and large-scale wireless networks.
Under the agreement, the two institutions will expand joint research and technology exchanges in future mobility and connected-car technologies that use advanced wireless communications. They plan to focus their collaboration on next-generation communications technologies that connect vehicles with the external environment in real time, and to identify international joint R&D projects.
Next-generation wireless communications technologies are considered key to advancing information exchange between vehicles and between vehicles and road infrastructure. As communication speeds and connection reliability improve, the safety and service competitiveness of autonomous driving and connected cars can also be enhanced.
“Next-generation wireless communications technologies, including 6G, vehicle communications and IoT, are key to improving connectivity and safety in future mobility,” said Jin Jong-wook, president of KATECH. “Through our collaboration with WiLab, which has specialized research capabilities in wireless communications, we will strengthen the technological competitiveness of the future mobility and connected-car industries, actively identify international joint projects, and expand technological cooperation between Korea and Italy.”
