【Financial News, Jeju = Reporter Jeong Yong-bok】 Heavy rain advisories were extended on the Monday morning commute from Jeju’s mountainous areas to the mid-mountain areas of Seogwipo City. With up to 70 mm of rain forecast for Jeju’s mountainous and southern mid-mountain areas through the morning of the 13th, people are urged to watch for accidents, particularly near mountain roads, valleys and streams.
According to the Korean Meteorological Administration, heavy rain advisories were in effect for Jeju Island’s mountainous areas and the mid-mountain areas of Seogwipo City as of 6:05 a.m. on the 12th. The areas needing to prepare for heavy rain expanded as the advisories were extended from the mountainous areas to include Seogwipo City’s mid-mountain areas.
Rainfall is forecast at 20–70 mm in Jeju’s mountainous and southern mid-mountain areas and 5–40 mm elsewhere. Heavy rain was expected particularly in mountainous areas through the morning of the 12th.
Rainfall is expected to vary significantly by area, with Hallasan at the center of the pattern. Relatively heavy rain will be concentrated in mountainous and southern mid-mountain areas, while some coastal areas may receive less rain.
The Korean Meteorological Administration urged people to take particular care around valleys and streams, where water levels can rise suddenly. It said people should avoid areas at risk of flooding, including riverside walkways, low-lying areas and underpasses, and check drainage facilities and nearby structures.
People in mountainous and mid-mountain areas should also prepare for soil runoff, landslides and falling rocks. As continued rain can weaken the ground, safety management around steep slopes, cut slopes and construction sites is also important.
People should also take care on the roads during Monday’s morning commute. In areas where it is raining, visibility may be reduced and roads may become slippery. Mountain roads that cross Hallasan, particularly Route 1100 and Route 5·16, may be affected by rain and low clouds, so drivers should slow down and leave plenty of room between vehicles.
Rain is forecast to continue in some areas until sometime between 9 a.m. and noon on the 13th, then gradually let up.
Temperatures are expected to change after the rain stops. Jeju’s daytime highs on the 12th are forecast at 25–26°C, above the seasonal average. Highs of 24–27°C are expected on the 13th as well, but temperatures are forecast to gradually fall as cold air moves in from the northwest from the afternoon.
On the 14th, lows are expected to fall to 16–18°C and highs to 20–23°C. Daytime temperatures will be lower than the previous day, and it is expected to feel chilly in the mornings and evenings.
The Korean Meteorological Administration urged people to watch for accidents near mountain roads, valleys and streams while it is raining, and to check the latest advisories and rainfall conditions.
