[Financial News] Former People Power Party lawmaker Yu Seung-min criticized President Lee Jae-myung’s use of social media (SNS) to deliver messages on the 11th, saying, “The sight of the president staying up past midnight and fixating on social media over such trivial matters itself makes the public uneasy and worried.”
Yu said this in a post on his Facebook page that day: “I fully agree with President Lee’s words, ‘If the goal isn’t to make a better world, there’s no reason to keep doing the difficult work of politics,’ but I hope he’ll reflect on whether his own social media posts are consistent with those words.”
He said, “If you think people criticize the president’s social media because it lacks dignity and authority, that’s a delusion of your own,” and added pointedly, “The president’s self-assessment was wrong from the outset. How many people, in the first place, expected dignity and authority from President Lee?”
Yu said, “Even if he behaved ‘gracefully,’ people would simply think, ‘That’s Lee Jae-myung being Lee Jae-myung.’ Of course, the president can use social media, but President Lee’s real problem is that he uses it to stubbornly defend failed policies.”
He continued, “He has posted countless times about real estate, yet instead of reflecting on policy failures, he doesn’t say a word about the rent crisis, which is causing ordinary people to suffer. Social media is merely a tool for insisting on his mistaken views on important policy issues such as stocks, the National Pension, Honam semiconductor, excess tax revenue, the Future Response Fund, the transfer of wartime operational control, the consolidation of military academies, dismantling the prosecution service and abolishing supplementary investigative authority. He shows no willingness to listen to people’s concerns and communicate,” he said.
He added, “It’s also a serious problem that the president’s social media posts are directed only at his own camp rather than toward national unity, and are mired in internal power struggles among his own side that have nothing to do with people’s livelihoods. The public is left tired and angry, wondering why they have to watch the president’s social media feud with anti-Lee Jae-myung figures in the ruling camp.”
Yu also expressed regret, saying, “The office of president is on a different level from being mayor of Seongnam or governor of Gyeonggi Province. It requires deep thought and reflection from the person ultimately responsible for running the country, as well as the wisdom and strategy to address the challenges of the times. Former President Roh was someone who gave such matters that kind of thought.”
