[Financial News] A migrant boat traveling from Djibouti in Africa to Yemen capsized, leaving at least 109 people dead and 116 missing.
On the 11th, AFP and other outlets reported that the International Organization for Migration (IOM), a U.N. agency, said a boat carrying migrants capsized at sea near Obock, a port city in northern Djibouti, while en route to Yemen between the night of the 8th and the early hours of the 9th.
So far, 109 bodies have been recovered: 52 men, 42 women and 15 children. About 80 survivors have been identified, all of them Ethiopian nationals. With 116 people still missing, Djibouti authorities are continuing search-and-rescue operations.
IOM is working with Djibouti authorities to carry out emergency rescue and relief operations at the scene, and is assisting 64 survivors at the Obock Migrant Center.
Yemen, the boat’s destination, continues to see clashes between government forces backed by Saudi Arabia and Houthi rebels backed by Iran.
According to IOM, more than 20,000 migrants have crossed the border from Ethiopia into Djibouti since the 10th of last month. More than 900 migrants died or went missing on the sea route to Yemen last year, and the scale of smuggling attempts rose by about 18% from the previous year.
