According to the Foreign Ministry on the 11th, Foreign Minister Cho Hyun held a situation review meeting with 15 diplomatic missions in the Middle East, assessing regional developments and reviewing safety measures for Korean nationals staying in the region.
Officials from the embassies of Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Iran, Israel, Kuwait, Jordan, Bahrain, Iraq, Lebanon, Qatar, Oman and the United Arab Emirates, as well as nearby consulates general, took part in the meeting.
Minister Cho said that regional instability was worsening, with fighting between Saudi Arabia and Houthi rebels recently damaging civilian infrastructure, including airports, and causing numerous casualties. He called on each mission to respond swiftly and stressed the need to remain vigilant and prepare for every possible scenario to protect Korean nationals abroad.
The Foreign Ministry will also raise the travel advisory for all of Saudi Arabia to Level 3, “Recommendation to Depart,” effective 10 p.m. that day. It advised that “Korean nationals staying in Saudi Arabia leave unless they have urgent business, and those planning to travel cancel or postpone their trips.”
