According to police on the 11th, Seoul’s Songpa Police Station brought A, a man in his 20s, to the station at around 6:27 p.m. that day.
A arrived at the police station wearing a black top and bottoms and a baseball cap. He gave no particular answer to reporters’ questions, including, “Why did you kill your mother-in-law?” and “Why did you kidnap your wife?” But when questions about the circumstances of the crime continued, he briefly said, “I’ll tell you everything during questioning.”
A is suspected of stabbing and killing his mother-in-law, who was in her 50s, on a street in Munjeong-dong, Songpa-gu, Seoul, that morning, then fleeing in a vehicle with his wife B, who is in her 20s. The couple were reportedly in the middle of a marriage annulment suit at the time.
Police were dispatched at around 5:38 a.m. that day after receiving 112 calls reporting that “a man is trying to drag a woman away” and that “a woman has collapsed.” A’s mother-in-law was found in cardiac arrest and taken to hospital, but died.
Police launched a search in coordination with the Gangwon Provincial Police Agency and, at around 10:30 a.m., found A’s vehicle and his wife B on a mountain in Yangyang County, Gangwon Province. B had minor injuries but was safe. Police searched the surrounding area and made an emergency arrest of A at around 12:35 p.m.
It was confirmed that A had been under police investigation before the crime on suspicion of domestic violence against his wife. On the 10th, police scheduled a suspect interview for Kim and asked him to appear, but he did not. Police later set a new interview date for the 13th and notified him, but the crime occurred in the meantime.
Police plan to question A about his motive and whether he planned the crime before seeking a warrant for his detention.
