According to Yoido Full Gospel Church on the 11th, former Representative Pence attended Sunday service that day with a delegation from the Association of Former Members of Congress (FMC) and met with senior pastor Lee Young-hoon.
Former Representative Pence said his father received the Bronze Star during the Korean War. He explained that his father taught his children the importance of dedication to defending freedom and democracy and of living a life grounded in faith, and that this experience also influenced the lives of his siblings, including former Vice President Mike Pence.
He said this was his first visit to Korea and remarked, “He would have been very proud to see how the Republic of Korea has grown into a prosperous democratic society today.”
He went on to say that “Korea-U.S. relations have evolved from cooperation for survival into a relationship that shares common ideals, friendship and growth.” He also expressed the view that the United States would remain committed to South Korea’s defense, security and peace.
FMC is a bipartisan exchange organization for former U.S. senators and representatives. Founded in 1970, it is a nonprofit that promotes democracy education and international exchanges. It also runs exchange programs involving current U.S. lawmakers and staff members and officials from partner countries’ legislatures in five regions and countries, including South Korea.
Those accompanying the visit included former U.S. representatives David Trone, Ron Klein, Mimi Walters and Elizabeth Esty, as well as FMC CEO Peter Weichlein. The FMC delegation has continued its exchanges, having previously visited the church and attended services there.
Pastor Lee Young-hoon said, “As we remember the sacrifices of Korean War veterans, I hope the friendship between South Korea and the United States, sustained in the pursuit of freedom and peace, will grow even stronger.”
