[Financial News] Hanwha Group Chairman Kim Seung-youn emphasized the importance of securing competitive AI technology on the 11th, saying that “defense artificial intelligence (AI)” underpins aerospace sectors such as satellites, integrated air defense systems and advanced engines, which are set to receive a total investment of 55 trillion won.
According to Hanwha Group on the 11th, Chairman Kim said in a speech marking the company’s 74th anniversary on the 9th, “The foundation of aerospace sectors such as satellites, integrated air defense systems and advanced engines, for which we announced a 55 trillion won investment plan, is defense AI capability. Finance, machinery and services also need to be backed by AI-based technology.” He added, “Securing competitiveness in AI-based technology to become a lasting leader will be possible only through a spirit of challenge that never wavers under any circumstances.”
Earlier, Hanwha Group announced in July that it would invest 55 trillion won in the aerospace and AI industries by 2040 to build space infrastructure. Specifically, the plan includes 23 trillion won for space launch vehicles, 20 trillion won for very-low-orbit satellites and space AI data centers, and 12 trillion won to develop the defense AI model “Defense OS,” which learns from and draws inferences from battlefield data.
Chairman Kim called for focus and prioritization above all else amid an increasingly complex international landscape and multilayered structures of competition and cooperation, saying, “The window for effective friend-or-foe identification has become very short in every field where Hanwha Group competes globally, including the defense industry, maritime, energy, finance and machinery. We must set our targets accurately and swiftly commit our capabilities.” He went on to emphasize, “Hanwha Group’s DNA is the indomitable spirit of challenge that has enabled us to break through the limits set by others in the defense and maritime sectors.”
