[Financial News] President Lee Jae-myung said in response to criticism from some quarters of his politics of communicating through social networking services (SNS), “They may criticize me, saying I lack dignity and authority, but I will continue visiting everyday places where people live their lives in the back streets with minimal security, communicating on SNS, and connecting with them in their own language.”
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) late on the 10th, President Lee wrote, “I’m reminded of President Roh Moo-hyun, who was criticized and ridiculed as lacking dignity for communicating with the public through comments.”
President Lee said, “It is also said that [former President Roh] refrained even from visiting markets because he worried that security arrangements and advance visits might inconvenience the public.”
In particular, President Lee highlighted his past remark, “Everyone, please don’t look toward that high place. Lee Jae-myung isn’t there. Because Lee Jae-myung will always be right beside you,” and said, “The feelings and resolve I shared with the people when I first ran for president have not changed for a single moment. Politics and power must be directed toward those at the bottom.”
He added, “If the goal isn’t to create a better world and help more people live happier lives, there’s no reason to keep doing the difficult work of politics,” and, “Ordinary people who lack power and possessions are more precious than high-ranking and influential figures, and they need more attention and support.”
The remarks are seen as making clear President Lee’s determination to continue communicating directly with the public through SNS and other channels.
