[Financial News] Hyundai Department Store is turning puffer jackets donated by customers into scarves and, in connection with their sale, donating an identical item to children from vulnerable groups.
According to industry sources on the 11th, Hyundai Department Store is running the “Warm Resource Circulation Project,” an eco-friendly social contribution initiative that involves customers. The filling from puffer jackets donated by customers is used to make scarves, and for every item sold, an identical item is donated to a child from a group vulnerable to cold waves.
The “Upcycled Down Scarf,” made jointly with outdoor brand National Geographic Apparel, uses filling from puffer jackets donated last March through the eco-friendly “365 Recycle” campaign. Hyundai Department Store sets a theme each month and collects donations of clothing, mobile phones, toys, insulated bags and other items at dedicated booths in stores nationwide.
For this project, filling was sorted from about 1,000 puffer jackets weighing approximately 1 metric ton in total. After recycling, 120 kg of duck and goose down was recovered and made into scarves jointly with National Geographic Apparel. The outer shells, linings and other materials aside from the filling were recycled as fuel for heat energy.
Hyundai Department Store combined resource recycling with donations tied to product purchases, enabling customers to take part in both eco-friendly consumption and giving.
The scarves will go on sale starting on the 12th at The Hyundai Hi (Hi), a premium curation specialty mall. A total of 2,000 will be available, and if all are sold, scarves will be donated to 2,000 children from vulnerable groups.
A Hyundai Department Store representative said, “Since this is a meaningful product made by recycling materials donated by customers, we designed it to let them experience both value-conscious consumption and giving at a reasonable price.” The representative added, “We will continue to foster a culture of everyday giving that anyone can easily take part in.”
