The city said it will make its city-brand typeface, ‘Busan Dandi,’ available for free to everyone starting on the 11th to strengthen Busan’s identity and image.
The new typeface follows the city’s release of ‘Busan Typeface’ in 2010. Its development focused on responding to the changing digital environment and enabling broad use across a variety of media.

Busan Dandi takes its name from the dialect word ‘dandi,’ meaning ‘surely, properly, and neatly.’
The typeface captures Busan’s dynamism and solid image. It comprises seven styles in total: three Busan Dandi Gothic styles, three Busan Dandi Serif styles, and one Busan Dandi Handwriting style.
The Busan Dandi Handwriting style was developed from handwriting written by Busan residents into an official typeface, and can be used for content that calls for a friendly, distinctive touch. Special characters include shells and starfish evocative of the sea around Busan, adding to the fun of using the typeface.
The city gathered feedback through a preference survey involving 11,352 residents and finalized the typeface after consulting experts, among other steps. It developed the handwriting style through a public contest.
Busan Dandi is the first typeface developed by a local government in South Korea to support 11,172 Hangul characters, 813 Latin Extended characters, and 986 KS symbols, making it usable in around 130 countries.
The city plans to promote Busan Dandi and take other steps to encourage its use across a range of areas, including the public sector, design and content production, and residents’ daily lives.
Mayor Jeon Jae-soo said, “Busan Dandi is Busan’s lettering, created and completed together with its residents. We will actively use it throughout city administration while creating various opportunities for residents to express Busan naturally through the typeface.”
