[The Financial News] U.S. President Donald Trump strongly criticized the Nobel Committee for not awarding him this year’s Nobel Peace Prize. He also claimed that he had ended eight wars and should have received eight Nobel Prizes.
At a rally in Syracuse, New York, on the 9th (local time) to support candidates in the midterm elections, President Trump said, “Today the Nobel Peace Prize went to someone I’ve never even heard of,” describing the recipient as “a mysterious figure nobody knows.” This year’s Nobel Peace Prize laureate is Navi Pillay, a human rights law expert who served as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and as a judge on the International Criminal Court (ICC).
President Trump claimed he had ended eight wars, saying, “If I had resolved just one of them, I could have received a Nobel Prize.” He added, “We should have received eight Nobel Prizes, one for each war.” He criticized the decision, saying, “The United States, which I represent as your president, should have received the Nobel Peace Prize but didn’t,” and, “This is an indelible stain on Norway and on those who made such a disgraceful and shameful decision.”
Among the conflicts he said he had resolved, he cited India-Pakistan, Israel-Hamas, Egypt-Ethiopia, Congo-Rwanda, and Kosovo-Serbia. He went on to say, “I’m also constantly preventing wars between South Korea and North Korea, between Japan and North Korea, and between China and Taiwan,” claiming that the fact that wars have not broken out in these regions is also thanks to his role.
He expressed confidence that he could also resolve the wars in Iran and Ukraine soon. Regarding Iran in particular, he said, “Iran will come to a conclusion very quickly, one way or another,” adding, “They either give us everything, or they cease to exist. They know that too.”
He also questioned the credibility of the Nobel Peace Prize. President Trump said, “The Nobel Peace Prize has forever lost credibility because of a small group of people with radical ideologies who are anti-democratic and, in effect, enemies of civilization,” and added, “We will not forget Norway for failing to award us this prize despite our having achieved the greatest accomplishments in history.”
The rally was held in New York, a Democratic stronghold, to support Bruce Blakeman, the Republican candidate for governor. President Trump urged his supporters to vote, saying, “If I’m not on the ballot, 48% of you won’t vote,” and, “Please think of it as if I were on the ballot.”
