[Financial News] Ahn Cheol-soo, a lawmaker from the People Power Party, called on President Lee Jae-myung to respond to the discovery of an anti-personnel mine near a beach in Ganghwa County, Incheon, believed to have been lost from North Korea.
On the 10th, Ahn wrote on Facebook, “North Korea is turning even South Korea’s waters into a minefield. How long will President Lee remain silent?” He called for an immediate end to the “groveling farce” toward North Korea.
Referring to the mine found near Daebinchang Beach on Jumundo, Ganghwa County, Incheon, he noted, “After North Korean mines were found in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), they are now being found in our waters and near our beaches, too.”
Earlier, on the 8th, one anti-personnel mine believed to have been swept away from North Korea and washed ashore was found near Daebinchang Beach on Jumundo, Seodo-myeon, Ganghwa County. It was the first mine found in Ganghwa County’s island areas in 54 days, since August 15.
Ahn criticized the president, saying, “If a tourist had stepped on the mine, it could have led to a horrific tragedy. Yet President Lee has maintained silence, even though more than five days have passed since the Joint Chiefs of Staff’s final announcement on the 5th.”
He added, “In the countless posts President Lee puts up on X (formerly Twitter), you can’t find even the word ‘North’ in ‘North Korea,’ let alone the word ‘mine.’”
Ahn said, “North Korea mocked the mine incident in which our service members were injured as a ‘staged act,’ and Kim Yo Jong even denounced our government’s plan to provide medical equipment worth 9.3 billion won as a ‘farce.’ If we sit by again this time, (North Korea’s provocations) will come closer.”
He also said, “I hope the president will do something in response to North Korea’s provocations, such as broadcasting to the North, distributing leaflets, or installing loudspeakers aimed at the North. If he lacks the courage to do so, I hope he will at least issue a presidential statement of condemnation on X.”
