[Financial News] A man in his 20s who made counterfeit 50,000-won bills and gave them to an acquaintance to use was sentenced to prison on appeal as well.
According to legal sources on the 10th, the Criminal Division 2 of the Suwon High Court dismissed the appeal by A, who was indicted on charges of counterfeiting currency and passing counterfeit currency, and sentenced him to two years in prison, the same as in the first trial.
A was sent to trial on charges of making 20 counterfeit 50,000-won bills with an acquaintance at his home in Gwonseon District, Suwon, last October. The method involved photographing genuine bills with a mobile phone, adjusting details such as the serial numbers, size and color on a computer, and printing them on A4 paper.
In November of the same year, A handed the counterfeit bills to his acquaintance B near the Yongin Service Area. Investigators found that B and another acquaintance went to convenience stores and other places in Gwangju and Icheon, Gyeonggi Province, through the following day, buying cigarettes and other items with the counterfeit bills and receiving change.
At the first trial, A was sentenced to two years in prison. B, who was involved in circulating the counterfeit bills, was sentenced to three years in prison, while the other accomplices who took part in making and using them received suspended prison sentences.
The appellate court found that the first-instance court had determined the sentence after weighing A’s criminal record, the details of the crime and the fact that the crude counterfeiting method made it easy to identify the bills as counterfeit.
