【The Financial News, Jeju = Jeong Yong-bok】 The forecast rainfall for Jeju over the Hangul Day holiday has been raised to as much as 50 mm. Rain is expected in some areas throughout the weekend, with some areas seeing it continue until the morning of Monday the 12th.
According to the Jeju Regional Meteorological Office on the 10th, expected rainfall for Jeju from this morning through the morning of the 12th is 5–50 mm.
Rain is forecast to begin in parts of Jeju between 9 a.m. and noon on the 10th. The skies will generally remain cloudy on the 11th, with occasional rain in some areas.
On the 12th, the day after the holiday, rain may continue in some areas, mainly east of Hallasan, until sometime between 9 a.m. and noon. The weather agency expects considerable differences in the timing and amount of rainfall even within Jeju.
The rain coincides with weekend travel by tourists visiting Jeju. The Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Tourism Association expects about 165,000 tourists to visit the island over the four days from the 8th through the 11th. That is a 0.6% increase from 164,032 during the same period last year. About 72,000 people are expected to arrive in Jeju during the two days of the 10th and 11th alone, when rain is forecast.
Strong winds and high waves are expected at sea in particular. In the inner offshore waters southeast of Jeju Island and the outer offshore waters to the south, winds of 9–15 m/s are forecast from the afternoon of the 10th through the morning of the 11th. Waves are expected to reach 1.5–3 m.
The weather agency said there is a possibility that a high-seas advisory will be issued for the inner offshore waters southeast of Jeju Island and the outer offshore waters to the south on the afternoon of the 10th.
Waves are also expected to reach up to 2 m in the coastal waters off southern and eastern Jeju from the afternoon of the 10th through the morning of the 11th. Since conditions differ between offshore and coastal waters, vessel operations should be checked against the actual route and the latest weather advisories for the relevant waters.
The spring-tide period, when the moon’s gravitational pull raises sea levels, also begins on the 11th. Along coasts where high waves coincide with high tide, people should take care to avoid flooding in low-lying areas and other safety incidents.
On land, roads may become slippery and visibility may decrease while it rains. Low clouds and fog may affect Hallasan’s mountain roads and mid-mountain areas, so rental-car drivers and hikers are advised to take care.
Despite the rain, temperatures are expected to be above normal. The high on the 10th will be 25–27°C, above the normal range of around 22–25°C, and highs of 26–27°C are forecast for the 11th and 12th as well. The morning low will be 20–22°C on the 11th and 21–22°C on the 12th.
