U.S. President Donald Trump selected conservative-leaning television commentator Katie Zakaria as White House press secretary on the 9th (local time). Zakaria is a senior communications adviser at Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), the parent company of Truth Social, the social media platform founded by President Trump.
Trump said on Truth Social that he had appointed Zakaria as press secretary, saying, “She has been a loyal and outstanding supporter from the beginning, and a passionate fan and member of MAGA (Make America Great Again).” He also emphasized that she had taken part in his past campaigns and helped secure victories in key battleground states.
Zakaria, a former lawyer with four children, also served as a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson for several months toward the end of former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s tenure.
Zakaria is from California, a Democratic stronghold, and graduated from Pepperdine University and its law school. She entered politics in 2006, during the George W. Bush administration, working as an intern at the Republican National Committee (RNC).
