[Financial News] The Syrian government is reportedly considering deploying its troops to a military operation against Houthi rebels in Yemen.
On the 8th (local time), Middle Eastern media outlets, including Voice of Emirates, reported, citing U.S. government officials, that the move was raised during discussions on military support for the Yemeni government forces backed by Saudi Arabia. Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa is considering Saudi Arabia’s request for military support from various angles, but has not yet made a final decision on participating in military operations in Yemen.
Options currently under discussion include providing defensive military support to Saudi Arabia’s mainland or deploying Syrian troops directly to Yemen to fight Houthi rebels alongside Saudi-backed forces. The possibility of several thousand Syrian troops moving to Yemen has been mentioned if a deployment decision is made, but the nature and scale of any intervention remain under consideration.
These discussions took shape after a recent summit in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, between Syrian President al-Sharaa and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud (MbS). The two leaders discussed key regional issues, including Yemen’s security and military situation, and the U.S. Trump administration was also reportedly informed of the two sides’ discussions about the possibility of Syrian involvement.
As military tensions persist in Yemen and the Middle East situation intensifies over security in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, the possibility of Syrian military intervention is adding to the mix, and the complex situation in the region is entering an even more unpredictable phase.
