People Power Party Supreme Council member Kim Min-su delivered sharp criticism of the government’s egg import policy and response to inflation at a Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly on the 8th, calling them “a foolish move that would make even elementary school students laugh.”
Kim said, “When the price of a tray of domestic eggs surged to as high as 7,560 won in mid-June, the government supplied eggs at the extraordinary price of 4,980 won, saying it would bring prices under control. But it turned out they were imported eggs from Brazil.”
Kim focused in particular on the issue of covering the price difference during the importation and domestic supply of eggs.
Kim claimed, “The government imported eggs at 39,000 won per tray and released them into the domestic market for 4,980 won,” adding, “That effectively meant covering the 34,000–35,000 won price difference per tray with taxpayers’ money.”
Kim then directly criticized the government, saying, “A policy of buying at 39,000 won, selling at 4,980 won and plugging the gap with taxes is ‘sucker economics,’ following ‘hotel economics.’ If you are unqualified and cannot handle the position, step down.”
Kim also raised the need to investigate the selection of import countries and the process used to determine costs.
Kim expressed doubt, saying, “There were countries where eggs could have been purchased for much less, so why import them from Brazil at such a high price?” He urged that it “must be checked whether an unimaginable international commission was at work.”
