\ \ [Financial News, Sejong = Kim Won-jun] Sejong City is accelerating its drive to become a hub for advanced industries by attracting a large-scale artificial intelligence (AI) data center representing a total investment of 7 trillion won.
Sejong City said it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with SK Securities, Meteus Asset Management and Seed H on the 8th at a meeting room in City Hall for investment in the construction of an AI data center.
The signing ceremony was attended by key officials, including Sejong Mayor Jo Sang-ho, SK Securities co-CEO Jung Jun-ho, Meteus Asset Management CEO Kim Se-heon and Seed H CEO Baek Kwang-hyun.
Under the agreement, the investment consortium, including SK Securities, will invest a total of 7 trillion won by 2029 to build a 360-MW AI data center hub. It will be one of the largest data center complexes in the country.
Sejong City plans to work with relevant agencies to actively support permitting procedures under applicable laws so that construction of the center can proceed without a hitch. It also decided to focus its administrative resources on resolving difficulties in securing a site—a key requirement for data center operations—as well as in supplying electricity and water.
The investing companies also agreed to carry out their investment projects, including financing and infrastructure development, as planned and without disruption, while working with Sejong City to identify and pursue various joint initiatives to invigorate the local AI industry ecosystem.
Sejong Mayor Jo Sang-ho said, "This agreement is a meaningful first step toward laying a new foundation for Sejong City’s growth." He added, "Using the construction of the AI data center as a springboard, we will build an ecosystem that attracts advanced companies, research institutions and outstanding talent, and make Sejong City a leading AI industry hub representing Korea."
Meanwhile, Sejong City is considered an ideal location for a large-scale data center, thanks to its locational advantages as a Multifunctional Administrative City and its well-developed advanced research infrastructure. In particular, the establishment of a large 360-MW data center in Sejong, where major government ministries and national research institutions are concentrated, is expected to accelerate the convergence of public-sector big data and private-sector AI technologies. This is also expected to generate significant employment across related upstream and downstream information technology (IT) industries, as well as drive data-based administrative innovation.
