[Financial News] Kim Ji-yong, nominee to become the first head of the Serious Crime Investigation Agency, named “ending the politicization of investigations” as his top priority ahead of his confirmation hearing at the National Assembly on the 14th. He also outlined plans to respond firmly to serious crimes and quickly get the newly launched Serious Crimes Investigation Agency’s staffing, facilities and systems in order.
Kim, speaking on the 8th at the office of the confirmation hearing preparation team in Jongno-gu, Seoul, said, “Ahead of the confirmation hearing, I would like to share with the public my commitment to how I will lead the Serious Crimes Investigation Agency,” and made the remarks.
He first stressed, “I will put an end to the politicization of investigations.” Kim said, “In the past, the prosecution service carried out ‘targeted investigations’ and ‘fishing-expedition-style investigations’ for political purposes, resulting in numerous abuses and ultimately leading to the abolition of the prosecution service. I am painfully aware of the current situation.”
He added, “The Serious Crimes Investigation Agency will firmly uphold political neutrality and the independence of investigations, and will investigate rigorously and fairly in accordance with the law and principles, regardless of party affiliation,” and, “We will establish our standing as a professional investigative agency trusted by the public.”
He also outlined a tough stance on serious crimes. Kim said, “We will eradicate insurrection crimes and will not stand by in the face of acts that undermine national discipline; we will firmly set them right and establish discipline.” He added, “We will investigate corruption, financial and white-collar crimes fairly without taking sides, and crack down on them severely.”
He also identified the early stabilization of the Serious Crimes Investigation Agency, which launched on the 2nd with the post of chief vacant, as a key priority. Kim said, “Immediately upon taking office, I will form a dedicated team and overhaul staffing, facilities and systems,” adding, “We will actively recruit talented people with diverse expertise, including not only former prosecutors but also police officers, lawyers, accountants and experts in various fields.”
Asked about the “veto sentiment” raised in some quarters, Kim replied only, “I will address that at the confirmation hearing.”
