[Financial News] The ruling party has strongly criticized PPP lawmaker Kim Tae-gyu for bringing up Owl Rock, where former President Roh Moo-hyun died, during a parliamentary audit by the National Assembly’s Legislation and Judiciary Committee. DPK lawmaker Kim Yong-min called it “an attitude even more Ilbe-like than Ilbe” and called for severe disciplinary action through the formation of the National Assembly Ethics Committee.
On the 7th, Kim Yong-min wrote on social media (SNS), “Yesterday at the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, PPP’s Kim Tae-gyu made remarks mocking President Roh Moo-hyun. I strongly called him out and protested, even getting his right to speak suspended, but he has shown no remorse at all.”
The criticism was directed at remarks Kim Tae-gyu made the previous day during the National Assembly’s parliamentary audit of the Supreme Court and other institutions. As Son Sol of the Progressive Party was questioning Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae, Kim said, “Let’s make our own ‘Truth of Owl Rock’ movie.” Owl Rock is where former President Roh Moo-hyun died on May 23, 2009.
The remarks were immediately followed by a heated argument. When Cho Kuk Innovation Party lawmaker Park Eun-jung protested, “Act like a human being,” and Kim Yong-min chimed in, “You’ve never been human,” Kim Tae-gyu retorted, “Kim Yong-min, Kim Yong-min, did Owl Rock hit a nerve?”
Even after Seo Young-kyo, chair of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, suspended his right to speak under Article 145 of the National Assembly Act, Kim Tae-gyu continued to protest: “You say we should watch a grossly immoral movie, but Owl Rock hits a nerve?” During questioning that afternoon, he also refused Chair Seo’s demand that he express regret, saying, “Anyone who hears something like this and doesn’t raise their voice would be a stone Buddha. Much to my regret, I’m not quite a stone Buddha.”
Kim Yong-min condemned Kim Tae-gyu, saying he “has absolutely no qualifications to serve on the Legislation and Judiciary Committee or as a member of the National Assembly,” and strongly urged disciplinary action, saying, “Please, let’s form the National Assembly Ethics Committee first.”
The DPK, too, characterized Kim Tae-gyu’s remarks as mockery of the deceased and said it would begin expulsion proceedings as soon as the Ethics Committee is formed. DPK floor spokesperson Lee Ju-hee said Kim Tae-gyu had “made a mockery of a former president’s death” and called for an apology to the bereaved family and the public.
By contrast, PPP members of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee held a press conference, saying they had merely responded to insulting remarks by opposition lawmakers. They accused Chair Seo Young-kyo of biased handling of proceedings by suspending Kim’s right to speak and called on her to issue a public apology.
